      Hastings College English alumni teach in schools, colleges and universities around the country. They study for their doctorates and masters around the world, including the University of Edinburgh. They earn law degrees, write for magazines, and work in marketing departments as writers and graphic designers.   But an English major in the 70 th percentile of English-major-earners will make around thousand more than a business major in the 30 th percentile for that major.       NSU's English program is structured to help students tailor their major to suit their needs. Each student chooses from several program emphases, each of which prioritizes different skill sets and content to suit students’ own career goals. NSU's English degree pairs well with other specializations, and students are encouraged to take minors, or even to double major in areas such as history. Students in the department graduate prepared for pre-professional programs such as the Denver Publishing Institute and have gone on to careers in public relations, teaching, journalism, business and finance as well as writing — from screenwriting and fashion writing to editing and publishing works of various genres. Undergraduate students who are planning to pursue licensure to teach at the secondary level should complete the 22 credit pre-professional program in education.

Students should also complete a major or the equivalent in one of the arts and sciences disciplines closely. Special Education pre-professional program participants are advised to declare Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies or psychology as their major.

Students pursuing Art, Dance, Music, Theater Education, Health and Physical Education or Secondary Education as their pre-professional program should choose a major in the appropriate content area.

Pre-Professional Programs at Community Colleges. Pre-professional majors are not limited to four-year colleges and universities. In community colleges, a pre-professional major leads to an associate’s degree in your chosen field and is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree program.

Pre-Professional Internship Professor: Karen Lewis and the Undergraduate English Office houses a book of solicitations for interns that shows the types of placements that have been targeted to or held by English majors in the past.

It is preferred English major applicants have a GPA and have successfully completed the Professional. While there are no pre-law, pre-med, pre-dental, pre-optometry, or pre-podiatry majors, students planning to further their education in these professional fields often select majors within the College of Arts & Sciences.
